Technology In Education
Tying new technology into teaching is time-consuming, and having students use technology in the classroom can be intimidating if the teacher is unsure of the technology. These are legitimate concerns, common among seasoned teachers. Traditional teachers are well-prepared, and rarely in a vulnerable position in their classes where they just “don’t know”. Yet, we sit at the precipice of a new era, an era of transformation in education; a transformation that was ushered in by advances in technology.
This generation being taught is the first generation to be completely enveloped in digital communication from birth. While educational theorists debate the existence of digital natives (those raised and subsequently fluent in digital media), and digital immigrants (those now learning digital media), the gap in communication is apparent. Texting, instant messaging, tweeting, Facebook, Wikipedia, YouTube and many others are now ubiquitous forms of communication where students have the strongest of foundations. In a deluge of information, understanding how to find the right information is part of becoming information literate, and is now integral to how students learn.
