The Science Fair is Approaching

By Christina Gionet

This past Thursday was one of our last in-person visits to Everett. When we arrived, we were surprised to find the library filled with rows of chairs and a podium in the space that we usually have tables and chairs for mentoring. Apparently, the school had an assembly, but the set-up wasn’t there for long as a team quickly broke it down and moved the tables back into place. Crisis averted.

We had a bit of a different approach this time. Instead of signing kids in as they entered the library, we had them go to a table and the mentor at that table would sign them in on the sign in sheet there. We were short three of our mentors so we were prepared to have several students at a time. Then unexpectedly, we had a group of student volunteers come into the library and they were ready to help us out! Crisis averted.

The new ENGAGE Everett! website is ready, http://www.etest.townwebsites.org/  and we wanted to make sure all the students had an account, so we had returning students go down to the computer lab and set-up an account while new students were mentored. Some of the student volunteers helped out in the computer lab, while others stayed in the library to assist with mentoring. Everything ran more smoothly than expected. We had the students in the computer lab write a post about their science fair project. Then, when the first time slot was over, the students in the computer came upstairs for mentoring, and the students who had just been mentored worked on the computers or went to catch their bus. The students are all working on their projects and most are ready to run experiments. One group is testing toy and food preference in dogs, while another young lady is testing the best method for making rock candy. I cannot wait to see the finished products; they will be great!
